Beach packing can be a bit tricky! For example, when I packed for OBX, I forgot to check the weather. I guess when you think of the beach, you imagine sun, sand, pool and more sun, but tend to forget that it still rains in the summer. Below is a list of things that I think will be essential for you to pack, before your road trip to OBX.
Maxi Dress: I usually pack two maxi dresses for anywhere I go. Maxi dresses can easily be styled casually or you can dress them up by adding accessories. Old Navy has some really great options and if you’re willing to invest a bit more money, Calypso St. Barth has you covered.
I wore two of my maxi dresses to the beach as well as to most of the restaurants we visited like The Paper Canoe and Red Sky Cafe – more about these restaurants in another post.
Boyfriend Jeans: I have a pair of boyfriend jeans that I take with me everywhere! They are comfy, light and perfect for summer road trips. I like to wear mine with a crop top over my bathing suit or with off the shoulder blouses and of course, you can never go wrong by pairing it with a plain ribbed tank top.
My boyfriend jeans got a lot of use during this trip. They were perfect to wear while exploring the Outer banks distilling & The Wright Brothers National Memorial.
A Comfy Swimsuit: I’m all about comfort when it comes to swimsuits. There are tons of fun water activities to do in OBX like kayaking, horseback riding, kite boarding, surf lessons and more. As much as I also love me a cute bikini, I recommend packing a swimsuit that you know won’t give you any “accidents” when having fun under the sun.
Sandals and Wedges: This is obvious but it is very important to pick a pair of sandals/wedges that go with most of your looks. I always only bring two pair of shoes on any of my trips and try to work my outfits around them. It saves you lots of room in your luggage.
Light Trench Coat: Rain is so unpredictable, always make sure to bring a trench coat with you. When traveling to OBX during the summer, you’ll need a light trench coat, preferably with a hood to protect you from the rain.
Floppy Straw Hat: Lately, I’ve been all about the floppy hats and I definitely put mine to use in OBX. It saved me from getting wet from the rain and getting burnt from the sun. A must have for sure!
