How many years have you been in business?
I have been a professional makeup artist for 18 years
What inspired to become a makeup artist?
When I was 14 years old… I started doing my mother’s makeup. My mom was going through a divorce and I felt like I could help her in the dating scene by doing her makeup. I have always been an artist since childhood. I asked if I could do her makeup and she obliged. The result of my makeup application on my mother was life changing for me. I not only made her look a better version of herself but I also witnessed the confidence and joy my makeup brought to her… Not to mention all the compliments she received. Makeup has been my passion ever since.
What do you love most about being located in DC?
What I like most about being a makeup artist in DC is that it’s the most powerful Capitol city in the world. Living in DC has given me the opportunity to work with a huge range of clients that most don’t have access to in other cities. Everyone from actors, musicians, dancers, authors, politicians. You name a type of career I have probably worked with them.
How is it working with First Lady, Michelle Obama?
Working with The First Lady Michelle Obama for the past 7 1/2 years has been an amazing experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity for sure. I have traveled the world with The First Lady Michelle Obama and President Obama. 33 countries to be exact. I feel very honored and blessed. Michelle Obama is my mentor and I’m happy to say a friend. Being responsible for ALL FLOTUS official appearances domestic & foreign including state dinners, her television appearances, official portraits, magazine covers / yes including Vogue!
What is your next step in the industry and where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself doing makeup in some capacity for sure. Teaching makeup application and techniques as well as makeup tutorials are areas I’m branching into now… I know I will always do bridal makeup. Being apart of a brides wedding day is very special to me. Helping a bride and her bridal party is and feel beautiful is awesome. What can I say I love all things bridal.
Share with us and our readers an insider’s tip into your favorite spots or activities in the city.
I enjoy activities like working out, walking, hiking, kayaking and going to SoulCycle. Trying new restaurants and returning to my favorites. I really enjoy visiting museums especially all the art studios and gallery’s DC has. There always a new art installation somewhere.
