Next on our ‘Inspire Me’ series, we have celebrity hair stylist and make-up artist and now Creative Director of his new family owned salon, Iva Bella Salon, James Cornwell. Being in the business for over 14 years, Cornwell has traveled the world, worked behind the scenes on runways and photoshoots with some of your favorite celebs. Now James has decided to return to his roots, to his hometown of Warrenton, to give clients a luxury experience. He is able to stay true to himself, with his intoxicating personality, able to connect to whomever he is around, and natural gift of taking you to the next level of beauty. James Cornwell has made his mark in the district as one of the top hair and make-up expert.
1. How many years have you been in business?
I’ve been doing this for over 14 years
2. What inspired to become a triple threat (hair, make-up, and stylist) artist?
When I started as a makeup artist a Lady who owned a hair salon in Purcelville, VA hired me and in a short period of time she pulled me aside and said “You are going to be a hairstylist and you are going to be a damn good one” Thank you Millie for my start all those years ago. But I always had a vision of creating beauty looks from head to toe…. And I’ve done so with great success!
3. How did you get into your line of work?
I kind of fell into it. I use to ride and train show horses, and show all across the country. I had some great clients and show horses! Then one day I just decided I wanted to be in the beauty industry so my journey began.
What keeps you motivated?
I really love making people look and feel more beautiful. I thrive on the innovation and inspiration in the beauty industry, and have a mission to make a positive impact in the industry.
4.How has it been owning your own salon?
First and foremost I am the “Creative Director” for Iva Bella Salon, It is a joint adventure with my amazing Sister -n- Law Mary Lieb and my awesome brother Lanny Cornwell. Its an amazing industry and a dream come true!
What are some of the struggles you have encountered?
To be honest, not many. We all face typical life struggles, but I never let them detour me from my focus. A bitch session here and there with good friends always helps, but if you stay focused and know you are doing good things, everyday struggles become stepping stones to your life goals.
5. What is your next step in the industry and where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Next step is to continue developing all natural hair care and beauty care, and to start my writing adventures….. can’t give it all up right now 🙂
In 5 years I’d like to have a husband to share my amazing life with and to enjoy his, and adding Top selling Author to my list of accomplishments!

7. Share with us and our readers an insider’s tip into your favorite spots or activities in the city.
Malmaison is one of my favorite spots. They are located in Georgetown and have the best Iced coffee. Exercising through the city, especially the waterfront and around the monuments, our city is beautiful!
