Maketto is a retail and dining experience unlike any other in the capital. The space features a minimal but trendy attitude that attracts all foodies and fashionistas alike. It’s a one-stop destination for those who are looking to indulge in unique Cambodian and Taiwanese dishes, flaky croissants, aromatic coffee and even some retail therapy. We had the opportunity to talk to co-founder and chef Erik Bruner-Yang (who is also the chef behind Toki Underground) about all things Maketto and DC.
Since I was 15 years old, so almost 17 years and going strong.
What inspired the name of your business?
Maketto: It was a word that we made up. I loved the way it sounded and it just had the feeling for what we were going to create.
How did you get into your line of work?
I wanted to be self-sufficient growing up and I loved the creative nature of working in the hospitality industry. My first job was making caramel popcorn at the mall!
What do you love most about being located in DC?I love the sense of community in DC. It is a large city but really feels like a small town. Everyone knows each other and is supportive of one another.
