Getting their start from making bracelets, Premium Co. has come a long way in their five years of being in business. Taking the basics and giving it a luxury edge, this D.C. base brand has a range of multiple clothing products. From full-zip and quarter-zip hoodies, wool sweaters, bomber jackets, lounge pants and a selection of T-shirts, they offer pretty much everything to complete any layered look. I had the opportunity to interview the brand’s co-founder and designer Davin Gentry. He takes us on a journey of the ins and out of creating your own brand. Check out the interview then head over to the brand’s online store to shop the collection now.
When did you fall in love with fashion?
I’ve always been “into” fashion. I can remember certain outfits of mine dating back to elementary school but I don’t think I really fell in love with fashion until High School. This is when Girbaud, Iceberg, Platinum Fubu, and Jerseys were all huge. But this is when fashion was crucial because you had to be fresh. I remember traveling to Denver with my mom for a wedding the summer going into my Senior year and finding a Nolan Ryan Throwback Astros jersey. This was right when throwbacks REALLY were becoming the wave. I saved that jersey for like 2 months until Homecoming so I could wear the hat in school too. One of my top 5 fashion moments in life.
How many years have you been in business?
We’ve been in business since 2011. Our 5 yr. anniversary is this summer.
What inspired the name of your business?
The name, as cliche and broad as it is, really just summed up the goal of the brand since the beginning. The quality in every aspect had to be premium. So there was no other name that was a better fit.
How did you get into your line of work?
I’ve always been some type of designer. When I graduated High School I hand painted custom clothing. That was my job for like 6 years. I designed custom clothing for 2 Chainz, Yung Joc, Fat Joe, Rocko and other artists and athletes in that era. At the same time I was in college for graphic design and advertising. When I left school I basically just combined those skills and that’s what landed me in this line of work.
What do you love most about being located in DC?
I love the diversity of DC. It’s one big melting pot of cultures. That really ties into the brand heavily, because we try to cater to a very diverse audience.
Share with us and our readers an insider’s tip into your favorite spots or activities in the city.
My favorite spot in the city is Union Market. I spend most of my days there. Back to the diversity, but the market just offers so many different types of food. Essentially it’s like if Truckeroo was open 6 days a week, year round. Aside from Union Market, I like hanging out at the Navy Yards. I just like the landscaping and overall vibe down there. Best Spring time activity is Rock Creek Social Club’s Grilled Cheese Social. Shout out to my business partner Scooty and the whole RCSC team. But it’s an ill day party at Marvin on 14th with a crazy grilled cheese menu, held once a month from Spring to Summer.
